It’s almost May and that means I’m setting up another month in my Bullet Journal. May is always a crazy busy month for my family so planning ahead is essential. If I don’t plan ahead I end up running — usually late — from one event to another and hiding under the covers with what free time I have left.

Hello Mayhello may bullet journal

I used to think these intro pages were silly, so much time and effort on fluff. But once I gave them a try, I got addicted to it! Not only do they jazz up my journal, but they really get me in the mindset of the time period I’m entering. Every month is different- different events, different weather, busy, slow, etc.  When I sit down to draw out my intro it helps me adjust my thinking to whatever vibe is needed for what I have coming up. 

When I sat down to think about May this year the fact of spring in full bloom is really undeniable. I live in the south where the sun is already beating down and the birds are so loud they literally wake me up in the morning – it sounds idyllic but seriously they are really loud! So anyway, I just had to draw up a representation of full spring.

I could say this butterfly represents how busy and social I’ll be this month, but I’ll never accomplish so much while looking so good. I’m more of a caterpillar type, with a messy bun and perpetual cup of coffee.

May Calendar

As you can see, May is crazy busy for me. I actually have added 5 more events to this calendar in the 2 days since I took the picture! The last month of school is always packed with events. I’m also trying to squeeze in a trip to celebrate my 15th wedding anniversary. Fingers crossed!

I use the traditional minimalist style as designed by the creator of the Bullet Journal system Ryder Carrol. It works well for me because I try not to overschedule my days with more than 1 major event at a time, but that might change against my will in the near future.


May Tasks and Goalsmay bullet journal

Here I map out what I need to focus on this month, as well as the myriad of little tasks that I need to find time in my schedule for. At the top I list my main priorities. I’ve found this really helpful in keeping me from getting distracted with all the little things that take over your day as a parent. If I’m not careful I can easily see a whole month go by without ever finding the time for those big goals. By keeping it simple and concise, I’ve got a shot at actually feeling productive come months end :).


The bottom half of the page is a general brain dump of things that need to be addressed this month. These aren’t necessarily time-sensitive, but it’s a general list to reference when doing my weekly or daily planning. It’s so easy to forget when I don’t write things down! This list helps me to keep that little stuff from falling thru the cracks.


May Trackermay tracker

This is one of the most productive spreads you can have in your Bullet Journal! List the habits or tasks you want to keep track of along the side, and then mark what you did each day. This spread can really give you insight into how often you are really accomplishing what you set out to do. Once you have a clearer picture of how often you perform certain activities, it’s so much easier to set realistic goals for yourself, and gradually grow into those habits you want to make a part of your life.


Gratitude Loggratitude log

This is my gratitude log, it has 31 lines where I write down, every day if I can, something in that day I feel grateful for. The idea is that even on your worst day, you are forced to take a step back and look on the bright side. The act of being mindfully grateful can have long-term effects on your health, your self-control, and your general satisfaction in life. Psychology Today writes “ Regular practice of gratitude can change the way our brain neurons fire into more positive automatic patterns. The positive emotions we evoke can soothe distress and broaden our thinking patterns so we develop a larger and more expansive view of our lives.” Sounds good to me:). 

As much as I love the research and agree with the principles, I have to admit I find it hard to keep up with every day. I tend to get rebellious in the face of relentless cheerfulness. But I’m gonna keep at it because I believe logically it’s better to focus on what’s going right in your life than on what’s going wrong.
